Chancellor Merz argues that Israel has the right 'to defend its existence' and protect its citizens, and says Berlin is coordinating its diplomatic efforts with France, the UK, and the US
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday called on Israel and Iran to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions and destabilize the Middle East region.
In a statement after Israel's military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, Merz refrained from explicitly criticizing Israeli government, but argued that Israel has the right "to defend its existence" and protect its citizens.
“The German government has repeatedly expressed its concern about Iran's advanced nuclear weapons program for many years. This nuclear program violates the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and poses a serious threat to the entire region, especially to the state of Israel,” Merz said.
He noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him Friday morning to inform him about the Israeli military's strikes and objectives.
“We call on both sides to refrain from steps that could lead to further escalation and destabilize the entire region. We are coordinating closely with our partners, particularly within the E3 with France and the UK, as well as with the US,” Merz said.
"Germany stands ready to use all diplomatic means at our disposal to exercise our influence on the conflict parties. The goal must remain that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons," the chancellor added.
